Abstract/Summary The diffusion coefficient and saturation concentration of water in calcium aluminosilicate glasses of type (CaO·Al2O3)x (2 SiO2)1-x under specific annealing conditions were measured via FTIR. It was determined that water concentration profiles within the samples were well described by a single diffusion coefficient. The concentration of water at the surface of the glass was found to increase with time during annealing indicating a slower equilibration of water between the atmosphere and glass than expected. Apparent diffusion coefficient and saturation concentration values were also determined by an investigation of the water uptake of thin (100 μm) samples and were found to agree roughly with those obtained from the profiles.
