The object of this project was to screen strapped (salph)Co (Salph= N,N’-bis(3,5-ditert-butyl salicylidine-1,2-benzenediamine)) catalysts for propylene oxide polymerization. Since
the monomeric (salph)Co catalyst polymerized propylene oxide to highly isotactic PPO and the oligomeric [(salen)Co] catalysts gave such high regio- and stereospecific epoxide ring openings, it was
thought that strapped (salph)Co catalysts might give high regio- and stereospecific propylene oxide polymerization. Also, since the mechanism of propylene oxide polymerization is believed to be
bi-metallic, comparison of the strapped bi-metallic (salph)Co catalysts to the monomeric (salph)Co catalyst was of interest. The carbon chain lengths of the strap were varied to compare the
activity of (salph)Co catalysts to the strap lengths.
